Job Description

Athletic Trainer SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Athletic Director (AD), the Athletic Trainer (ATC) is responsible for evaluating athlete conditions, injuries and illnesses, conducting diagnostic tests and communicating results to medical professionals and coaches. Duties also include developing injury prevention programs, scheduling medical referrals, and customizing treatment plans for injured athletes to include training, exercises, and rehabilitation programs. Responsible for attending all home competitions and practices depending on schedules.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Athletic Training Program Administration & Management

  1. Coordinate with the Athletic Director regarding duties, responsibilities, and special projects.
  2. Attend key athletic program meetings as requested.
  3. Ensure student-athletes are medically eligible to compete as per NJCAA rules and regulations.
  4. Maintain all athletic training program records (e.g., treatment, rehabilitation, etc.).
  5. Maintain medical and safety related inventory (e.g., PPE, preventative, and first aid supplies).
  6. Evaluate and recommend techniques and equipment to enhance safety.
  7. Manage applicable budgets.
  8. Must understand and comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

ATC Coverage/Attendance

  1. Home Games: Attend all home contests and arrive at least one hour before the event, which may include evenings and weekends. Note: Occasionally more than one home game may occur simultaneously requiring additional ATC services; however, this situation would be known in advance for planning purposes.
  2. Away Games: Attend away games as requested, which may include evenings and weekends.
  3. Practices: Attend as many practices as possible based on schedules, which may include evenings and weekends.
  4. Clinical Hours: Maintain onsite (Dallas, NC Campus) clinical hours based on availability and schedules.
  5. Back-up/Additional ATC Coverage: Schedule back-up/additional ATC coverage with local providers as needed or appropriate as per the schedule options.
  6. Post-Season: As requested, provide coverage for a team’s post-season competition/tournament.

Injury Prevention and Evaluation

  1. Conduct athlete intake assessments and maintain medical records for all athletes.
  2. Conduct injury screening clinics, educational programs, and workshops to promote safety and injury prevention.
  3. Provide preventative taping, wrapping, bandaging, and strapping of athletes, as needed.
  4. Assist with coordinating mandatory student-athlete physicals and related documentation and recordkeeping.

Injury Treatment and Rehabilitation

  1. Apply first aid and provide other medical assistance as deemed reasonable and possible under the circumstances, pending the arrival of emergency medical services in the case of major injuries.
  2. Develop customized treatment plans for injured athletes and make appropriate recommendations for ideal steps to be taken for progressive care.
  3. Provide concussion testing and/or coordination for additional services as needed.
  4. Report the status of injuries to the Athletic Director, staff, and/or coaches as appropriate including risk factor modifications and planned rehabilitation programs.
  5. Facilitate communications between an injured athlete, athletic staff and/or coaches, parents/guardians, the team, and/or the athlete’s personal physician.
  6. As needed, coordinate care and treatment by a student-athlete’s personal physician and/or athletic training program affiliated physicians.
  7. Recommend exercises or other physical measures for minor injuries under the direction, supervision and review of a physician.

Training and Educational Programs for Student Athletes

  1. Provide athletic training program education to athletic staff and coaches.
  2. Provide injury prevention and rehabilitation information to student-athletes.
  3. Provide nutritional information to student-athletes.

General

  1. Maintain a high standard of professional and ethical practice in representing the College. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and/or confidential information. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the field or discipline with continued adherence to professional accountability. Maintain cooperative working relationship with students, co-workers, other organizations, and the public. Provide a high level of service to customers by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and partnerships. Accept responsibility for managing situations and problems. Utilize independent judgment in problem solving. Work cooperatively with team members and colleagues, contributing positively and constructively to the achievement of team, department, and college objectives.   2. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or related field from a nationally accredited institution.
  • Current BOC (Board of Certification) certification required.
  • Current North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners (NCBATE) licensure.
  • Current CPR certification.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience as a certified athletic trainer in an athletic environment required.
  • Knowledge of NJCAA rules and regulations preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Proven ability to collaborate, effectively communicate, and work independently.
  • Must be able to multitask by working on various assignments at the same time.
  • Must be able to build rapport with diverse populations
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines required.
  • Strong computer skills - proficient in all Microsoft Office software programs
  • Understanding of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Detail oriented.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to travel to a variety of locations within a reasonable time frame, including evening and weekends.

  • Some locations may have stairs and may not have elevators, and some events will involve outdoor venues subject to inclement weather and hot and cold weather conditions.
  • Walking, bending, standing, kneeling, stretching, sitting, reaching, grasping, bending, pushing, pulling, kneeling, squatting, stooping, and twisting.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate office, multimedia, and computer equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to work independently with little direction and meet deadlines.
  • Work environment can be stressful at times in dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines.
